Felice Mosca Publishes Essays in Metaphysics and Moral Philosophy

A Landmark Tribute to Philosopher Donald Phillip Verene Brings Together Twelve Voices in an Ongoing Conversation About Philosophy, Culture, and the Human Condition

REDDICK, FL — Felice Mosca is proud to announce the publication of Essays in Metaphysics and Moral Philosophy: Considering the Views of Donald Phillip Verene, edited by Dustin Peone. Available in paperback, the volume gathers twelve original essays by former students and colleagues of Donald Phillip Verene—one of the most distinguished philosophers of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries—in a celebration of a life devoted to the pursuit of wisdom.

This is not a conventional academic anthology. As Timothy Harfield writes in his Introduction, the volume “offers a chorus of perspectives, each distinct, but all resonating with the philosophical spirit that Verene has nurtured in his teaching and writing: contemplative, imaginative, and always reaching for the whole.” Together, the essays explore enduring questions in metaphysics and moral philosophy, drawing on traditions ranging from ancient Greek thought and Renaissance humanism to Vico, Hegel, Cassirer, and beyond.

Donald Phillip Verene is widely regarded as the foremost authority on the Italian philosopher Giambattista Vico in the English-speaking world. Over a career spanning more than six decades, he has authored or edited more than twenty books—published by Yale University Press, Cornell University Press, Northwestern University Press, Oxford University Press, and others—examining the deepest problems of Western philosophy: self-knowledge, culture, memory, and imagination. His work has shaped generations of scholars and thinkers across philosophy, literature, and the humanities.

Contributors include Raymond Barfield, Thora Ilin Bayer, Travis Foster, David Lovekin, Glenn Alexander Magee, Frederick R. Marcus, Nancy du Bois Marcus, Jennifer Lobo Meeks, Jennifer Rust Murray, Dustin Peone, Scott Samuelson, and Charlotte C. S. Thomas. Their essays range across topics including medical education and philosophy, Ernst Cassirer’s theory of symbolic form, the transmission of wisdom, the philosophy of technology, Vico’s relationship to Hebrew thought, Platonic education, allegory, melancholy and memory, the dialectics of humor, and the philosophy of food. The volume closes with an Afterword by Verene himself.

In his Afterword, Verene reflects on a lifetime of philosophical inquiry, offering a moving conclusion to the volume: “We find ourselves together in this volume. I thank each of you for thinking of me and my ideas. But even more, I thank you for continuing to do philosophy each in your own way, in your own voice, and thus in its true way.”

Felice Mosca is an independent publisher based in Reddick, Florida, dedicated to publishing books for humans in a posthuman world. Essays in Metaphysics and Moral Philosophy is its inaugural publication.
