The oldest institute devoted to Vico, founded in Naples in 1971 by Pietro Piovani. It became a research centre of Italy’s Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche and in 2002 was folded into the newly created Istituto per la storia del pensiero filosofico e scientifico moderno, formed by merging the Naples Vico centre with Milan’s centre for sixteenth- and seventeenth-century philosophy.
Its defining undertaking is the critical edition of Vico’s complete works, a project conceived by Piovani and carried forward by Fulvio Tessitore and Manuela Sanna as successive directors of the centre — deliberately departing from the editorial tradition of Croce and Nicolini by combining philological with philosophical method. The Centro maintains a specialist Vico library, publishes the Bollettino, and anchors the Portale Vico. For anyone working on Vico, this is the field’s centre of gravity.

Centro de Investigaciones sobre Vico (CIV)

The institutional home of Vico studies in the Spanish-speaking world, the CIV exists chiefly through its publishing: it edits Cuadernos sobre Vico and issues the journal’s Archivo académico of contributors, editorial guidelines, and cumulative indices of past volumes. Its programme remains the one set out in 1991 — promoting the study of Vico’s thought and works, tracing their influence on Spanish and American thinking, and developing the historiographical categories of previquismo and posviquismo — alongside translating Vichian texts and producing bibliographical studies under its “Biblioteca” heading. I
ts reach extends well past Spain: the journal’s advisory board draws on scholars in Buenos Aires, Toronto, Uberlândia, Mexico City, Cambridge, Birmingham, and Berlin. In practice the Centro and the journal are a single enterprise, the former being the standing structure behind the latter.

Fondazione Giambattista Vico
President: Dr. Luigi Maria Pepe
Founded in 1999 at the instigation of Elena Croce and through the efforts of Vincenzo Pepe, Gerardo Marotta, and Alfonso Andria, the foundation has worked to recover the Castello De Vargas Machucca at Vatolla — the castle where the young Vico developed his philosophical thought in the late seventeenth century — which now hosts seminars, conferences, and exhibitions.
The castle houses the Museo Vichiano and the library of the Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park, some twenty thousand volumes. Its activities span seminars, conferences, master’s programmes, scholarships, theatrical productions, and concerts, working with Italian and foreign universities, and it awards the annual Premio internazionale Giambattista Vico to figures in culture and to Vico scholars. Cultural and public-facing rather than narrowly scholarly, but well-resourced and visible.
